Water Sanitation and Hygiene Intervention for Urban Slum: A Study in Chittagong City, Bangladesh.

Abstract
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene facilities for low and slum area of Chittagong have not been explored in detail in the scientific or grey-literature or developmental initiatives. Low income community development is the prerequisite for the overall development of a society. There are different kinds of parameters to widen community development, such as health, economic, social, a living pattern, etc. Sanitation condition is the crucial aspect that is directly or indirectly inter bond with all the parameters This study employs a structured questionnaire survey and semi-structured key informant interviews. The study revealed that the majority of the slum people face a range of problem associated with WASH such as absences of relevant statistical data,unhygienic sanitation technologies, insufficient public baths and toilets, unsafe drinking water and lack of awareness of safe personal WASH behavior. All respondents experienced WASH-born diseases such as diarrhea, stomach infections and pains at least once a month, resulting in a loss of 10% of monthly income on average. Based on these findings , it is recommended a census be conducted in order to collect proper statistics on slum areas to developed and implement both technical initiatives to improve conditions for this marginalized population and contribute to the sustainable development goals in Chittagong, Bangladesh and Globally.. To see the exact reasons behind brutal unhygienic sanitation conditions of water supply and latrine system in a low cost community, the Chittagong City Corporation area has been picked. Relevant data have been collected from field survey, consultancy with local inhabitants. To know the possible reasons behind the water supply and germ-infested sanitation, state of a low cost community, this paper attempts to shed some light on the tribulations behind the scarcity of safe drinking water, dirt free as well as sustainable latrine and drainage system and offensive water management.
